PEMBROKE, N.C. — Meshack Koyiaki won the individual title, leading five Columbus State runners in the top 10 finishers Saturday as the Cougars claimed their fourth consecutive Peach Belt Conference cross country championship.
The CSU women, led by individual champion Naomi Tanui, placed four runners in the top 10 to easily win their fifth straight conference crown.
Tanui won the 6-kilometer race in 22:26 by 35 seconds over teammate and PBC Runner of the Year Brittany Skiles. CSU’s Kelli Arnold was fourth in 23:23 and earned PBC Freshman of the Year.
CSU’s Koyiaki, the co-PBC Runner of the Year, won in 24:38, the second-fastest 8k run at a PBC Championship. He held off North Carolina-Pembroke’s Pardon Ndhlovu, who was second in 24:57.
Three CSU women are among the seven runners on the all-conference first team: Tanui, Skiles and Arnold. Another teammate, Ashley Arnold, is on the second team. Three CSU men are among the five runners on the all-conference first team: Koyiaki, Nicholas Kering and Stewart Helton. Two CSU men are on the second team: David Marley and John Neill.
CSU’s J.D. Evilsizer was named the Peach Belt’s Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second time.
