Joe Hamilton, former Georgia Tech star quarterback, and recently named assistant director of player personnel for the Yellow Jackets' football program, resigned from the position Wednesday, one day after his arrest on drunk driving, hit-and-run, marijuana possession and open container charges.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson.

"Today, I sadly accepted Joe's resignation," Johnson said in a press release from the school. "I know he has great love and concern for this program and always will. Both athletic director Dan Radakovich and I made it clear to Joe that we would offer any support he requires in the coming weeks and into the future.

"Joe will always be a part of the Yellow Jacket family."

Hamilton, the 1999 runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, was stopped by a Georgia Tech police officer early Tuesday morning because the officer said his black Ford Expedition matched the description of a car involved in a hit-and-run crash.

During the stop, Hamilton reportedly failed a series of sobriety tests.

He played for Georgia Tech from 1996-1999, before brief attempts at playing in the NFL and a career in the Arena Football League. He was hired by Tech's athletics department April 28.
