Hurricane Irma aftermath forces football teams to adjust schedules
As Chattahoochee Valley locals settle back into their routines following the rough weather that came courtesy Hurricane Irma, several local football teams have begun altering their schedules.
At this point, three previously scheduled football games have been adjusted. Central head coach Jamey DuBose confirmed his team’s home game against Kathleen, a high school in Lakeland, Fla., has been canceled. Spencer’s road game against Dougherty County, previously slated for Thursday, has been moved to Saturday at 2 p.m. Columbus’ Thursday game against Shaw has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 5.
The inter-state matchup between Central and Kathleen promised to be an interesting one. Kathleen went 5-5 last season in Florida’s Class 7A and are 0-2 this season. Spencer, meanwhile, gets two extra days to prepare to play Dougherty County. The Class 3A Trojans went 2-8 in 2016 and sit 1-3.
The postponement of the Blue Devils and Raiders matchup holds some significance. What was slated to be the first region matchup for both teams is no longer, as Columbus will now open Region 1-4A play Sept. 22 against Hardaway in Kinnett Stadium. Shaw, meanwhile, begins region play Sept. 22 at defending region champion Cairo.
