The Central-Phenix City Red Devils dipped into the Columbus High's past for their new baseball coach, hiring former Columbus High standout Scot Hemmings on Friday.
Hemmings won three state titles with Columbus and played collegiately at Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College. He was drafted in 1997 by the San Diego Padres and played three years in their minor league system before retiring with injuries. He earned his undergraduate and masters' degree from Troy University and has coached the last four years at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Ga.
Hemmings replaces Jason Stamp, who coached for two years in following the 24-year stint of Ron Nelson.
"The biggest thing that got me excited (about the job) is the excitement from the people in the community," Hemmings said.
The Red Devils begin their summer baseball workouts on Monday.
