With an area championship and the only local representative at the state meet, the Northside rifle program swept the top honors of the 2011 Ledger-Enquirer All-Bi-City Rifle Team.
Patriots shooter Matt Sitler is the All-Bi-City Shooter of the Year, and Lt. Col. (retired) Richard Brewer is the All-Bi-City Rifle Coach of the Year.
Sitler, a Columbus State signee, credited his success as a senior to his four years developing in the Northside rifle program.
“I started out as a freshman, and I didn’t know a whole lot,” said Sitler, who averaged a Bi-City best 288.00 in 2011. “Really, my team is the reason why I got to where I am now. It took a lot of time and dedication from my coach and the time and dedication from the shooters who worked with me who have all graduated. They put in the time to show me the ropes and show me what it takes to be a great shooter.”
Never miss a local story.
Sitler said the highest point of the season was winning the Montgomery Bell Academy Rifle Classic, a national meet in Nashville, Tenn. He also led his team to the Area 1 championship and qualified for the state championship meet as an individual.
Brewer, whose team reached the sectional meet, said his success is due to the dedication of his shooters.
“I think it boils down to having kids who really want to excel and really give their best effort,” Brewer said. “Their hearts are in it, and as a result, they all seem to do their best. Having guys like seniors Matt Sitler and Paul Hubboch set the tone for the rest of the team. We were able to do well with the younger shooters coming up and trying to model that behavior.”
