This is the fifth in a series examining high school football teams in the Bi-City area during spring practice.
Chattahoochee County's spring practice lasts from May 6-16.
Team name: Chattahoochee County Panthers
2013 record: 3-7, 1-7
Never miss a local story.
How finished in region: 8th in Region 5-AA
Playoff result: Did not make playoffs
Key losses: TE Jamaris Jones, WR Javaris Jones, LB Marquis Jews, DL Trae Jones
Key returnees: QB Chris Askew, OL Peter Ofoa, OL Marcus Saunders, LB Ladaris Taylor
My take: Chattahoochee County won just a single game in its region last year, and things certainly won’t get a whole lot easier in 2013.
Perhaps the team’s most effective player, Jews, will be lost to graduation. He recorded 115 tackles, eight sacks and two forced fumbles last season, and his production will certainly be missed.
Finding a capable replacement on that side of the ball will be one of the goals in spring for the Panthers. Fortunately, they had another great contributor in Taylor, who had 98 tackles, seven sacks and three forced fumbles.
Offensively, the team would appear to be in an alright position going into spring. It returns its quarterback, Askew, as well as two of its top offensive linemen. The main area to focus on in spring is at wide receiver and tight end. Combined, Jamaris and Javaris Jones had 56 of the team’s receptions, which is the vast majority.
The team will practice on May 6-16, enough days to get a good grasp of what it has coming back.
Then, it will be full steam ahead in trying to prepare it to make a steep improvement on its region record in 2013.
