Team name: Harris County Tigers
2013 record: 8-5, 5-0
How finished in region: Region 1-AAAAA champions
Playoff result: Lost 64-13 to Gainesville in quarterfinals
Key losses: QB Justin Wright, DE Jay Ellison, ATH DiQuan Roberts, LT Travon Gunn, LB Tyler DeNova, LB Mike Walker, FS Marvin James
Key returnees: QB/WR TaQuon Marshall, S A.J. Howard, LB Jaborie Partridge, OL Tyler Boutwell, OL/DL Key Hicks, C Brad McCoy, RB Esaias Chapman
My take: It will be interesting to see how Harris County follow up its impressive run in 2012. It will be without a number of key players—Wright and Ellison to name a couple, DeNova (the QB of the defense, according to coach Tommy Parks) and James to name a couple more.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that it will return nearly its entire starting offensive line, a line that helped block for a 2,000-yard rusher in Chapman, who is also returning.
That’s a good nucleus on offense.
Defensively, there will be a handful of question marks, for sure, but there is still plenty of talent there.
In spring, it’s all about building depth, giving players who may not have gotten as much playing time last year some much-needed reps.
Marshall, who was a quarterback as a freshman and a wide receiver a year ago, will need to increase his comfort level as the signal caller, but he’ll have the benefit of one of the best running games around to help ease the pressure.
All in all, this looks like another good team. Will we see it go on a streak like it did a year ago? Maybe not, but we also won’t see it lose four straight games out of the gate.
My guess is that this will be a very solid team that once again competes for a region title. After that, as we saw last year, it’s anybody’s guess.
