My take: Jordan has had a full season under head coach Jim Brown, who took over the team prior to 2012. They learned the expectations, the style, the system.
Now, it’s time to execute.
That’s the focus for the Red Jackets in spring, translating what the players have learned to on-field improvement.
“I’ve made it a point to tell the kids we’re going to focus on blocking, tackling and executing both offensively and defensively,” Brown said. “We’ve got the schemes down now, we just need to execute. You can’t beat anyone if you can’t do that.”
That showed in a winless season last year, and Brown openly admitted his team still has a long way to go. It loses its biggest leader on defense in Wyatt and a lot of its offense in Sheppard and Yarwaye. At the same time, the returning players have a better idea of what to expect and, for the first time in a few years, have had a full offseason program.
“I think it’s made a difference in the way they’re approaching things,” Brown said. “There’s more focus, the intensity level is better. They’re more comfortable in what they’re doing. We’re nowhere close yet, but I see improvement.”
The outlook for Jordan all depends on your expectations. Will it win eight or nine games? Probably not. But there should be noted improvement, as there was last year despite the winless season.
Working hard and having confident players makes a huge difference, and Jordan is headed in the right direction in that regard.
