Coach: Randy Grace, third year, 5-15 (26-38 overall)
Assistant coaches: Alan Griffin, offensive coordinator, Carson Hinton, defensive coordinator, Ryan Babb, Justin Newman, Don Vestal, Deandre Bowman
Homefield: Diemel Field
2012 record: 4-6
Region: GHSA 4-AGood news: The Vikings return eight starters on both offense and defense, seven of which are entering their third year at the top of the depth chart. Last year, the team made huge strides at the beginning of the year, winning its first four games and setting itself up nicely entering region play. Quarterback Wyatt Peterson (1,824 total yards, 24 touchdowns) is back under center, as is running back Deandre Bowman (643 yards, 7 touchdowns rushing).
Bad news: The Vikings simply need to figure out how to win in the region. Outside of a 35-0 win over Central-Talbotton to start region play last year, Pacelli was 0-6, losing by an average of 46-17. It lost its way on both sides of the ball during a four-game stretch against Brookstone, Marion County, Greenville and Dooly County, three of which made the playoffs. It must navigate those games better if it wants to contend for the region in 2013.
Our take: There's little question that Pacelli is headed in the right direction. Coach Randy Grace improved the team's win total in each of his two seasons at the helm. That's the expectation again. Whether that leads to a playoff berth, who knows? But it's fair to think the team could have its first winning season since 2007.
