Bessemer Academy exploded for 27 points in the second quarter and used a blitzing defense to stop Glenwood's motion offense in the second half en route to a 55-17 victory Friday night at Sammy Howard field.
Big plays were the name of the game for both teams in the second period with the Rebels, at the time trailing 3-0, started the barrage with a 50 yard touchdown pass to Matt Kyker from Cole Hamilton on the first offensive play of the second period.
The Gators came right back as Humphries found a wide open Dylan Denny for an 81-yard pass play to regain the lead. The Rebels responded with a 78-yard drive capped by a second TD pass, this one to Noah Napier and Bessemer never trailed after that.
The games leading rusher Brandon Cook broke loose for a 66-yard run for the third Bessemer touchdown and Hamilton got his third touchdownof the half on a 25 yard run following an interception by teammate Josh Boles.
Denny scored on a two-yard run just before the half to cut it to 27-17 but the Gators did not score another point.
The Rebels meanwhile kept the pressure on Humphries and scored on more big plays for four touchdowns in the second half to ice the game while shutting out the Gator offense.
Cook had another run of 70 yards for a score and finished with 202 yards on eight carries and two TD's. Napier also added a TD run with his pass and kicked extra points for Bessemer.
