Northside's Kaden Freeman picked off two passes and had a 21-yard punt return that sparked the Patriots in the third period to lead his team to a 26-8 victory over Jordan on Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium.
Northside lead by a single point at intermission, 7-6, when Freeman grabbed a third-quarter punt on the dead run and took it 21 yards to the Jordan 29-yard line. Three plays later, the Patriots' Larry Gilyard bulled his way up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown run and a 13-6 lead.
In fact, the Patriots outscored the Red Jackets 19-2 in the second half and evened their record to 1-1, while Jordan fell to 0-2.
Freeman got his first interception off Jordan's William Harris that thwarted one drive and then set up another touchdown with an interception and return of 19 yards that set up Kalen Watts' 14-yard score that sealed the win in the fourth. Watts also had a 49-yard run for a score in the third period.
Never miss a local story.
Jordan dominated the time of possession in the first half, but the Patriots got on the board before intermission thanks to quarterback Jonathan Karastury. He faked to Gilyard but kept the ball and went 77 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots' three previous possessions had ended in punts.
Jordan pulled within one point when it drove 52 yards and scored on a 3-yard run by Harris. However, the extra point was no good.
Northside drove to the Jordan 7 just before intermission, but Nathan Robertson's field-goal attempt was blocked.
Jordan's only score in the second half was a safety by Abrian Hollis.
Harris completed 16-of-33 passes, including eight to his favorite receiver, Javonte West, for 103 yards.
