HAMILTON, Ga. -- After missing Harris County's previous game, a 38-27 win over LaGrange due to injury, TaQuon Marshall came back Friday night with 3 first half touchdowns, but the Tigers still had to hold on late to defeat Veterans 30-20.
Harris County opened the game with a quick 4-play 70-yard scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead on Marshall's 28-yard run. Esaias Chapman had runs of 13, and 21 yards on the drive.
"He finally got released," Harris County coach Tommy Parks said of Marshall. "The best thing about him is that he is a coach on the field. He came out there even when he was hurt to help out."
The Tigers also scored early in the second quarter when Marshall scrambled to his right and then reversed the field to score around the Warhawk defense on a 9-yard run to cap a 66-yard, 13-play drive for a 13-0 lead.
Never miss a local story.
On its next possession, Harris County had another 4-play scoring drive. This one covered 50-yards and was capped on Keith Jenkins' 11-yard run for a 20-0 lead with 8:02 remaining in the first half. Marshall found A. J. Howard on a 39-yard completion on the play.
Marshall's next scoring play was Johnny Football- like as he took the shotgun snap and ran into Chapman, muffing the handoff. The ball popped in the air before Marshall could grab it. Once Marshall had the ball he ran to the right sideline and went 77-yards for a score and a 27-0 lead.
Veterans pulled to within 27-7 with a Desjuan Harris 7-yard touchdown run with 3:23 remaining in the half.
Harris scored again with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter to pull the Warhawks within 27-14 on a 1-yard plunge.
On the ensuing drive the Tigers drove to Veteran's 20-yard line before Marshall was sacked on third down. Isaac Grimes hit a 42-yard field goal to push the lead back to 30-14 with only 2:32 remaining in the third period.
"That 42-yard field goal with Isaac Grimes that was a big deal for us," Parks said. "That gave us a little breathing room and put us back into a two score lead. To me that was the key to the second half."
Veteran's added a fourth quarter score on Robbie Leever's 7-yard run but Leever's 2-point conversion run failed leaving the Harris County lead at 2 scores, 30-20.
The Tigers were able to run the final 6:41 off the clock in large part to a roughing the kicker penalty on Veterans on a 4th-and-27 from the Tiger 13-yard line.
Marshall led all rushers with 155 yards on 13 carries. Chapman ended the night with 23-carries for 89 yards.
