Brookstone beat Wesleyan 24-17 Friday at Rex Knight Field in a back-and-forth battle between the two private schools.
With the game tied at 17-17, Brookstone quarterback Miller Page scored on a 4-yard keeper with 1:26 remaining to secure victory as the Cougars defense held on from there.
Page finished with 66 yards rushing on 11 carries and most of the yardage came on the final drive that started from the Brookstone 22-yard line.
"I was not having much success throwing," said Page, a senior who also starts at safety and kicker. "So we ran some read options and I got comfortable running the ball."
Never miss a local story.
Last year in Atlanta, Wesleyan beat Brookstone 17-14 on a last-second 49-yard field goal. "This feels great," said Page. "A lot of guys from last year wanted to do it justice."
In the first half, Wesleyan struck first on a 46-yard scoring drive to go up 7-0 when quarterback Christian Stark ran it in from 8 yards.
Later in the first quarter, Brookstone's Prather Hudson intercepted a Wesleyan pass and returned it to the Wolves' 34-yard line. Several plays later the Cougars tied the game 7-7 when Sam Ndem ran it in from the 4-yard line.
Late in the second quarter Wesleyan threatened to score when Wolves cornerback Cole Mannion intercepted a Miller Page pass and returned it to the Cougars 9-yard line. But the Brookstone defense held and blocked a Wesleyan field goal attempt. The Cougars offense responded by driving down the field where kicker Page converted on a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
In the second half, Brookstone went up 17-7 when Ndem broke free for a 24-yard touchdown.
But Wesleyan rallied and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17-17. "We have played three close games and won two of them," said Brookstone head coach Brad Dehem. "I hope that makes us competitive down the road."
Brookstone finished with 300 offensive yards to Wesleyan's 279.
Ndem was the leading Brookstone rusher gaining 92 yards on 11 carries. Page was 6 of 12 passing for 60 yards with two interceptions.
