Coach Henderson believes intensity, attitude were lacking
Edgewood jumped out to a 27-0 first quarter lead, and the No. 1 ranked Wildcats showed a balanced attack in defeating Glenwood 47-14 Friday night at Sammy Howard field.
The one-two combination of quarterback Taylor Hawthorne and the running of Josh Crawford paced the Wildcats as they scored an additional 20 points in the second quarter to take a 47-7 intermission lead.
The win for Edgewood, now 4-0, was their 36th straight victory, as they have won the state class AA championship in 2011 and 2012.
Never miss a local story.
Hawthorne wasted no time as he threw the first of his four touchdown passes to his favorite receiver, Heath Young, for an 18-yard score and a 6-0 lead. The Wildcat defense held Glenwood. Then Hawthorne found Young again for a 13 yard TD and a two-point conversion, making the score 14-0 with only six minutes gone in the game.
Crawford did his damage in the air and on the run as he ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass from Hawthorne for a 35-yard score.
Hawthorne had 212 yards passing, all in the first half, with Young catching 5 passes for 112 yards and the two touchdowns.
"We did not come out of the locker room with intensity and were flat, and they caught on to it. We did not have the right attitude, and they are a good team and took advantage of that," said Glenwood Coach Tripp Henderson after the game.
The Gators got on the board in the first half as Lawson Humphries found his favorite target, Dylan Denny, who went 44 yards in the second quarter. He finished with nine catches for 140 yards and the score.
Denny's 30-yard catch in the fourth quarter set up Anthony Davis' 3-yard touchdown run in the second half as Edgewood emptied its offensive bench and did not score in the second half.
