The Spencer Greenwave got stellar performances on both sides of the ball Friday at Memorial Stadium, dominating Temple 48-6 in a Region 5-AA contest. The win moves Spencer above the .500 mark for the season at 3-2 and, more importantly, gives it a 2-1 region mark heading into the next contest on October 11 against Bremen.
"The key for us tonight was staying consistent and sticking to our game plan on both sides of the ball," said Spencer coach Calvin Arnold. "We wanted to establish our running game to set up the pass and were able to do that, and then we had a lot of guys running to the football on defense. We accomplished what we wanted to do."
The Greenwave scored on its opening possession after holding Temple to a three-and-out series to open the game. Taking over at its own 39, Spencer used a pair of big pass plays to cover the distance. A 26-yard strike from Tarvaraska Davis to Ervin Davis put Spencer in Tiger territory at the 31. After a running play failed to gain, Davis hit Damarkus Robins with a 31-yard scoring pass. The point-after attempt failed and the Greenwave led 6-0 with 6:29 to go in the opening period.
Spencer extended its lead on its first possession of the second quarter. Beginning at his own 41, QB Davis could not find a receiver on first down, so he tucked the ball and ran, finally getting brought down after 48 yards at the Tiger 11. A play later, Robins weaved in for the score. Christian Amable added the kick to make it 13-0 with 10:15 left in the half.
Temple got on the board later in the period, taking advantage of a Greenwave turnover. Chuck George broke free from 29 yards out on the first play after the miscue to give his team six points. Triston Williams blocked the point after, leaving the score 13-6 with 3:08 in the half.
The scoring was not done, however. After three straight penalties on Temple and on the third kick-off attempt, Robins gathered the kick in at his own 26 and did not stop until he got to the end zone. The 74-yard jaunt and Amable's kick made it 21-6 with 2:39 left and would be the final score of the half.
Spencer opened the second half with a 10-play, 55-yard drive. Temple gave the hosts good field position after attempting an onside kick to start the half. Lineman Chris Baker came in on first-and-goal from the one to cap the drive with his first TD of the year. Amable's kick was blocked and Spencer led 27-6.
The Greenwave scored quickly on its next two possessions in the third, both coming on long pass plays. The first from Davis to Richard Jones came from 35 yards out resulted in a 34-6 with 3:13 to play in the third. The latter came on the final play of the quarter from 49 yards away as Davis found Deandre Hubbard all alone after Temple players seemed to stop as the scoreboard horn sounded to end the quarter.
The final score came in the fourth quarter as Ervin Davis ran in from 22 yards with 7:30 to play.
Tarvaraska Davis finished the night 8-11 for 168 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Robins ran for 69 yards on 11 carries with one TD and added another on the kick return.
