Montgomery, Ala. -- Both Glenwood's boys and girls teams will be playing for AISA Class AAA state championships Tuesday as each won semifinal games Friday afternoon at Huntington College's Roland Arena.
The Lady Gators had to hold off an Evangel rally for a 49-47 victory, while the Gators pulled away from rival Lee-Scott in the second half for an easy 69-54 win.
Tamara York made sure the Lady Gators got into the title game when she hit a field goal with 1.7 seconds to play.
The teams had played once before and Glenwood won that game at home, 74-42. But this one was much closer as Evangel outscored Glenwood 15-7 in the final quarter.
The game looked well in hand in the first half for the Gators, who had a 31-20 halftime lead that at one point increased to 13 before the visiting Lions roared back.
"We did not play well in that second half, way to tentative and it nearly cost us," coach Julie Humphries said after the game. "But Emily Robertson hit a huge 3 for us and Tamara McClain added two free throws to keep us in the lead and then we set up that final play and Tamara came through."
York and McClain had 12 points apiece. Elizabeth Perdue added 11.
In the boys contest, Glenwood was ahead only by three, 28-25, when Ant Holtzclaw took command. He had 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.
"I told Ant to take charge and he did. We also hit our free throws as a team and that was a big plus," coach Dusty Perdue said. "Ant was our spark plug out there because I thought Lee-Scott had the momentum at halftime and his play got us going.
"It is hard to play a team three times in one year, especially when it is your rival."
Alex Hicks added 14 for the Gators and Tanner Thomason had 10.
The Lady Gators will face Lee-Scott on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the satte championship. It will be a rematch of the 2013 title game won by Lee-Scott. However, the Lady Gators have won all three games this season.
Meanwhile, the Gators (29-2) will face Tuscaloosa Academy, whose last loss was to Glenwood, at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
