EVANS, Ga. -- After having to come from behind in the first round of the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA state girls basketball tournament, Greenbrier left no doubt in the tournament's second round.
From the opening tip the Lady Wolfpack seemed to score at will, cruising to the 63-39 win over Hardaway Monday night.
The win placed Greenbrier in the Elite 8 with another home game Wednesday night against the winner of Drew and Richmond Hill
"I knew we had the potential to be here, it was definitely our goal," said Greenbrier coach Stefanie Basinger, who added that keeping her basic rotation of six to seven players healthy throughout the season was key.
Never miss a local story.
Third-seeded Hardaway (11-19) entered on the heels of 45-36 upset over Ware County, but the top-seeded Lady Wolfpack jumped out to a 16-2 lead with point guard Mallory Myers hitting 3-pointers, Marshall playing tough inside and Morgan Taylor slicing to the basket.
Greenbrier was in such control that 3-point-specialist Jennifer McMahan didn't hoist one from beyong the arc until almost midway through the second quarter. She connected on back-to-back 3-pointers, igniting a 16-2 run to close the half, giving the Lady Wolfpack a 42-17 lead. She would hit two of three attempts for six points.
"Our mindset always going into every game is get the lead, we've got to get the momentum," said Taylor, who led Greenbrier (24-6) with 20 points.
Myers chipped in with 15 points and Marshall added 14 as the Lady Wolfpack pulled the ball out and dribbled away most of the fourth quarter.
Basinger knows that the balance her team has will cause problems for her opponents.
"It's going to be hard for anybody to pin just one player and that's what's gotten us here," said Basinger. "No one can really play a box-and-1 on us when you've got four scorers on the floor."
Taylor Keith led Hardaway with eight points on the night. The Lady Hawks end the season with an 11-19 record.
