NEW ORLEANS -- The Sun Belt Conference named former Northside High standout Ventavius Sears as the Track and Field Men's Freshman of the Year.
Sears scored in four events for Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt indoor track championships last month.
His time of 21.28 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which was a personal best, was good enough for a fourth-place finish. It was fifth best time in WKU history.
Sears also scored in the long jump (third), triple jump (fifth) and 60-meter dash (eighth). He finished with 16 points, most of any freshman.
Sears will find out this week if his performance was good enough to earn a spot in the NCAA championships, which will be held March 14-15.
Sears won the Ledger-Enquirer's All-Bi-City Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year award in 2013.
