Columbus' Carter Mize, who compiled a sparkling amateur golf career, was selected to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame's class of 2015, it was announced Thursday.
"I was very surprised," Mize said Thursday night after a practice round for the Georgia Four-Ball Championship at the Cartersville Country Club. "It is great honor. I am extremely humbled thinking I would be mentioned in the same breath as some of the great players in the hall."
Others with Columbus ties in the hall include Larry Mize, Bill Ploeger, Hugh Royer Jr., Jack Key Jr., Billy Key, Fred Haskins, Gunby Jordan, George Hamer and William Zimmerman.
Mize played at Hardaway High and was a member of four state championship teams, 1977-80. He was also a four-year letterman on the Auburn golf team. He was the Auburn Player of the Year in 1983.
After his college career ended, he returned to Georgia. He won two state amateur championships in 1993 and '94. He also finished second twice.
Mize won the Georgia Four-Ball Championship four times in 1991, 1995, 2003 and 2004, all of those with partner Wright Waddell. Mize finished as runner-up three times. Mize and Waddell are playing together again this weekend.
He won the Southeastern Amateur Championship twice (1991 and 2003) at the Country Club of Columbus. In 1977, Mize was medalist in the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match.
Mize also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1986 and 1990. In 1991, he advanced to the Round of 32 in the U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Mize, who has been a member at the Country Club of Columbus since 1985, has won the club championship five times. He was the club's junior champion three times.
The induction banquet will take place on Jan. 17, 2015, at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek.
The other three members of the Class of 2015 are Ray Cutright, the Director of Golf at Idle Hour Club in Macon; Kenneth L. Mangum, the Superintendent of the Atlanta Athletic Club and Gene B. McClure of Atlanta, a lifelong contributor to the game.
