Editor’s note: With each new football season, fans, coaches and players alike scan the games and circle two or three that stand out from the rest. Whether it is a rivalry, has playoff implications or is simply a good matchup between two talented teams, those are the games people will look forward to. In this, the third of five blogs, I will take a closer look at another of the matchups I’m looking forward to most in the 2014 season.
3. Smiths Station at Enterprise, Oct. 17
It’s rare that you get to see a double-overtime thriller in high school football. It’s even more rare that you get to see two in the same season. It’s downright improbable that you see two double-overtime contests in the same season between the same two teams.
Somehow, that’s what we got between Smiths Station and Enterprise last season.
In the first game of the season, the Panthers survived 34-28. In the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, they hung on 41-34. The latter was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever covered, ending with an interception by graduated wide receiver/defensive back Johnny Woods.
It would be greedy to expect the same kind of showdown when the two teams meet this season, this team as region rivals, but I don’t think it’s far-fetched to say this could be one of the more exciting games on the schedule.
Sure, Smiths Station has lost some pieces, including former coach Mark Rose. But Jason Dukes appears to be a guy who can continue to push this program in the right direction.
Enterprise, as ever, should be a force to be reckoned with on the offensive side of the ball.
The Panthers also feature a few players who have been recruited highly, including defensive back Nigel Lawrence and linebacker Amonte Caban. The latter appears destined for an SEC scholarship, should he decide to go that route.
The new Class 7A, Region 2 is packed with great matchups, and this is one of them. If both teams play up to their potential, I full expect this to be another barn-burner. More than that, it could have playoff implications late in the season.
