Editor’s note: With each new football season, fans, coaches and players alike scan the games and circle two or three that stand out from the rest. Whether it is a rivalry, has playoff implications or is simply a good matchup between two talented teams, those are the games people will look forward to. In this, the final of five blogs, I will take a closer look at another of the matchups I’m looking forward to most in the 2014 season.
1. Central at Prattville, Sept. 19
It’s been two seasons since Jamey DuBose coached for Prattville, ending in a 2011 championship season. And while Prattville may not have the championship squad we’re all used to in 2014, his return to his former team presents us with the best matchup of the season.
DuBose was hired late to coach Central, taking over for Woodrow Lowe, who was not retained.
Never miss a local story.
On the outside, looking in, the changes he is making to the Red Devils team appear to be a revitalizing effort. Central was a great program before, but sometimes a team reaches a point where a change in outlook can take them to the next level.
DuBose might be the guy to do that for Central.
Central has plenty of exciting matchups this season. It will face Smiths Station, Auburn, Opelika and Enterprise. But its trip to Prattville will likely be the best.
The teams are likely on an equal level, and how DuBose fairs against his old team will be a popular topic of conversation.
Plus, it’s anyone’s guess who is the favorite in the new Class 7A, Region 2. Central has as good a chance as anyone, and this could be a game to put it in the driver’s seat.
