Two days after Central High landed Bobby Howard as its new baseball coach, principal Tommy Vickers announced the confirmation of two football assistants and one baseball.
Mark Hurt, who spent the past three seasons as the head coach at Blount High, will replace the departing L.C. Cole as the Red Devils defensive coordinator. Cole spent one season on DuBose's staff before accepting the head coaching position at Fairfield High in March.
Hurt has spent 13 seasons overall as a head coach. He was at Booker T. Washington from 2001-07 and Keith from 1998-2000. He also spent several seasons as an assistant with DuBose at Prattville. Under Hurt's watch, Blount went 22-11, went to the playoffs every year and won a region title in 2013.
DuBose said that getting Hurt was a "blessing," saying that their familiarity with each other would make for a better defensive output this season.
Never miss a local story.
"Getting someone who knows me, our practices, our system helps," DuBose said. "He runs the defense that I want to run, whereas last year was maybe not a great fit for our program. Getting one of my guys in is going to get things back to the way I like to be defensively."
Former Smiths Station assistant Cody Flournoy was also approved for a similar job on DuBose's staff. He will coach safeties, while Brandon Averett was elevated to cornerbacks coach.
The program is up to about 160 players currently, DuBose said, and needed a coach for basically each position group.
In baseball, Howard is already rounding out his staff of assistants. He lured former Beauregard head coach A.J. Kehoe away to join his staff of assistants. Kehoe spent 20 years as a head coach, establishing a career record of 438-200.
After years of success, his team struggled to a 13-18 record in his final season at Beauregard. He sports a resume that includes eight region championships and three trips to the state finals.
