Dual wrestling tourney approved for 2016-17
At the annual summer meeting, the AHSAA also approved the creation of a state dual wrestling tournament for member schools beginning in 2016-17.
In the past, only a traditional tournament in which individual wrestlers qualify has been held. In a dual tournament, entire teams advance and participate in state competition.
Smiths Station coach Tommy Sanders said that he saw the addition of a dual tournament as an overall positive situation.
Never miss a local story.
“It’s good for growing the sport of wrestling,” he said on Thursday. “It’ll make wrestling bigger in Alabama. More people can participate. The average kid isn’t going to be a state placer, but they can contribute on a state championship dual team. Everyone has a bigger chance to contribute, and that will encourage other kids to participate.”
