Brookstone boys golf team wins Class A-private school championship
The Brookstone boys golf team won the program’s 15th state golf championship on Monday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Cougars shot a 4-over-par 292 and easily beat First Presbyterian by 10 shots.
“It was a lot of fun to watch these guys play so well.” Brookstone coach Hunter Chapman said. “These guys wanted to get the program back on track.
“It was very satisfying and humbling to watch them.”
Brookstone was led by Walker Hinds, who finished fourth with a 1-under 71.
Strong Rock’s Logan Parkins won medalist honors with a 68. Jordan Long of Eagle’s Landing and Jake McWhorter of Mount Paran tied for second with 70s.
Brookstone had won five straight championships prior to last year when the Cougars finished fourth.
Chapman said that was a double positive for this year.
“It freed them up from the pressure of the streak,” Chapman said, “and it served as motivation.”
Brookstone also got a 73 from Evans Copeland and 74s from William Reaves and Frank Waldrep.
Hinds is a sophomore, while the other three are juniors.
“The future is very bright,” Chapman said. “We even have some good eighth-graders.”
The Pacelli girls team qualified in the sectional for the Class A-private girls tournament, which was also hosted by Forest Hills.
But Ellie Fuller suffered a broken ankle recently. Maddy Zimmermann played as an individual and finished eighth with a 78, her best round of the year.
