The Hardaway Hawks had defending Region 1-4A champion Cairo on the ropes in Friday night’s showdown. The problem was, the Syrupmakers got the last laugh.

Cairo’s field goal with 1:14 to go in the fourth quarter left Hardaway (1-3, 0-1) with a 9-7 loss to open region play. Marco Lee’s 9-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left in the first quarter stood as the Hawks’ only score of the evening.

Hardaway returns Sept. 22 against Columbus.

Marion County 45, Lamar County 20

Once again, it was the Travon Matthews show for Marion County on Friday.

Matthews ran wild on Lamar County, taking 21 carries for 237 yards and four touchdowns in the Eagles’ 45-20 victory. Matthews was an important player in a second half which featured 28 points for Marion County (4-0, 1-0).

The Eagles have an important region matchup Friday at Manchester.
