Spencer 112-pound wrestlerQuintri Noel
was still letting Saturday’s state championship set in on Monday when he was back at practice Monday preparing for this weekend’s state duals tournament.
“It took a lot of hard work,” Noel said of his Georgia High School Association Class AA title. “I’ve been working at this since I was a freshman at 112 really only weighing 103. It’s been a lot of work to get here.”
Noel pinned Dawson County wrestler James Evans in 3:39 in traditional state championship final at the Gwinnett Center Saturday to capture Spencer’s first individual championship since Fred Barber won a 145 title in 1990. It was the third state appearance for Noel, who finished eighth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior.
Of the more than 40 Bi-City wrestlers who reached the Georgia and Alabama state championship meets and the five who reached Saturday’s title rounds, Noel was the only to take first place.
“It feels great being the only one to win it out of all these great wrestlers in Columbus,” said Noel, who has a 41-4 record. “It feels really good, and I’m just proud of all my coaches and my teammates and everybody who supported me and helped me get through my senior year with a big bang.”
The Greenwave will compete Friday and Saturday at the GHSA Class AA duals state meet at Toombs County, and Noel said he is hoping to return with another first-place medal. The Greenwave wrestling team is 21-1 in duals competitions this season.
