has assumed his spot atop the league's list of top defensive players.
Daniels' two-interception performance on Saturday in the Lions' season-opening 67-20 victory at the Alabama Hammers in Huntsville, Ala., earned him SIFL Defensive Player of the Week honors on Wednesday. Daniels is no stranger to these sorts of honors as he won several last season in the SIFL and has been the overall Defensive Player of the Year three times in three different leagues.
Abilene Ruff Riders quarterback Joe Brannen was named the SIFL Offensive Player of the Week after he passed for 240 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for two more in an 83-27 victory over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads.
It was a tie for SIFL Special Teams Player of the Week between Albany Panthers kicker Wes Vergilio, who hit a game-winning 39-yard field goal to life the Panthers over the Louisiana Swashbucklers 30-27, and Trenton Steel kicker Craig Camay, who hit two unos and four field goals while acconting for 18 points in the Steel's 59-56 loss to the Richmond Raiders.
Speaking of the Raiders, the Lions host them in their home opener at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Center.
