It's a big week for signings in East Alabama.
Glenwood lineman Jason Motycka signed today to play for LaGrange College, Glenwood will have two baseball signees on Friday in Spencer Riley (Huntingdon) and Tyler Condrey (Convenant), and Smiths Station basketball player Achaia Cobb will sign with Chattahoochee Valley Community College on Friday.
Never miss a local story.
The following week is shaping up to be a busy one, too. The NCAA open signing period for basketball begins Monday, on Tuesday we have a couple Columbus girls soccer signees in Rachel LeRoy (Berry) and Rebecca Lee (North Georgia College and State), and on Wednesday we have three Pacelli basketball players signing in Brandon Miller (Shorter), Joseph Reese (Valdosta State) and Brea Walker (Columbus State).
And just to get you up to speed on why you'll be seeing more signing ceremony photos than stories in the paper, it's because we've changed our policy. With so many signings and only one full-time local sports writer to cover them - me - it really was consuming a huge chunk of my week and turned things upside down when, quite often, these signings were scheduled and announced just a day or two in advance. So rather than write the story, which between going to the signing, doing a quick interview and writing it up for the blog and then the paper took up at least two or three hours apiece, we'll be doing standalone photos for most signings. The exception will be Division I signees, who will get a story and a photo on the front of the sports page as has been our tradition.
I know many of you fell asleep as I was explaining that policy, but I thought I'd post it in case anyone was wondering why, after years of writing short stories on every signing and only printing photos of D-Is, we were all the sudden running photos of all of them and writing only on the D-Is.
On to something more exciting, here are some highlight videos of Moytcka and Cobb.
