In a rematch of last year's Alabama Independent School Association Class AAA state football championship last Friday, Glenwood quarterback Brandon Daley passed for 138 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown pass, to help the Gators top Bessemer Academy 17-15 on the road.
The final numbers weren't as important as the result of the game for Glenwood. For his role in getting his team's 2012 season off to a good start, Daley has been named the Ledger-Enquirer's football player of the week.
Daley spoke Monday with the Ledger-Enquirer to talk about the game, why he loves football and more.
Question: Bessemer got you guys last year in the state championship, so that was a big game to come back and get. How did that feel?
Never miss a local story.
Answer:Man, it was great. It was a tough game. It was close the whole game. We'd score, they'd score. I mean, it was just back and forth. But we got that last drive, and we put the go-ahead field goal on them. After that last game at state, that was just an indescribable feeling. To get that win in that first game of my senior year, you know, it's a good way to start.
Question: How important was it for you guys to start the season like that?
Answer:Yeah, I mean, it's huge. Last year, I know we started off like 0-2 in the region to stat. Then we had to go from the bottom and we had to work our way up. It's nice to start out with a win and then keep the momentum going and not have to climb our way out of the cellar each week. It just provides a little bit more of a safety net for us.
