Stohr looks to rebuild Hardaway softball program

Bill Stohr wasn’t looking to take over the head coaching position for the Hardaway softball team.

He had re-joined the program last season to be an assistant to Sammie Mathis. But when Mathis left, the school asked Stohr to step up and run the program again.

Stohr and the Lady Hawks will open the 2016 season on Aug. 15 with a road game at Jordan.

This is Stohr’s second stint as the Hardaway head coach. He was an assistant coach under Marty Richburg during the Lady Hawks’ dominant run in the early 2000s.

Hardaway won four straight region titles and the 2003 Class AAAA state championship.

After Richburg left to enter school administration, Stohr took over starting in 2006, then left after three seasons.

Stohr has a huge task on his hands in trying to get the program back to the elite level. The Lady Hawks have struggled in recent years, not making the state playoffs since 2011.

“You have to build very slowly. You can’t just expect everything to happen at once,” Stohr said. “We need to keep getting a couple of better quality girls coming in year after year. Right now, we are a very young team, so our goal this year is to make it out of region.

“I think we have a shot to come in fourth. It just depends on some of the other teams we haven’t seen yet.”

Stohr has 15 players on his varsity roster, however, only two seniors and three juniors. That means Stohr will be counting on a number of underclassmen.

One if Aiyannah Taylor, a freshman, who played two years on the Pioneer Little League team that advanced to the World Series. Stohr said he has practiced with her at every position, including pitcher.

Stohr compared Taylor to Aileen Morales, who was a member of the 2003 state championship team who went on to play at Georgia Tech. Stohr said Taylor is ahead of Morales at a similar point in their career.

Note: Hardaway is in Region 1-4A this year along with Northside, Columbus, Shaw, Carver, Westover, Cairo and Americus-Sumter. The top four teams will advance to the state tournament.
