Challenger Little League, founded in 1989 and established for children and adults with disabilities, welcomes children and adults of all ages, disabilities, and surrounding areas. Challenger is continually growing, this year expanding to six teams, up from four teams the past 13 years.
Though there are many volunteers who help this organization run smoothly, it does not come with a small price tag. With the help of generous sponsors, Challenger has been able to provide a wonderful and nurturing service to many people — players, volunteers and spectators alike. However, with the league growing, donations haven't been covering all the costs. After difficulty with other fundraising endeavors, David Crouse (husband to Rosanna Crouse, the event coordinator) designed and hosted a "FORE the Children" Benefit Golf Tournament. After much success in its inaugural year, the tournament has become the Challenger's primary fundraising event.
This year the 18-Hole Best Ball tournament will be held Saturday, April 12 at the Woodland Hills Golf Course from 9 a.m. until all awards are given out. The hole-in-one prizes include a 2008 Mustang GT from Rivertown Ford and a 2008 Chevy Silverado from Bill Heard Chevrolet. Other prizes are awarded for Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin, as well as trophies for first, second, third and last place donated from Stanley's Engraving and Frames.
The price to participate is $300 for a team or $75 for an individual. This price includes breakfast, lunch, greens fees and cart rental, as well as the round of golf. Pre-registration for the tournament can be conducted at Woodland Hills Golf Course, 592 Day Lake Drive, Midland, Ga. Donations may also be sent by check or money order to Challenger Little League, 2007 Wagner Drive, Columbus, GA 31907.
