DEVENS, Mass. — Stephanie Kono shot a 68 on Tuesday to finish at 6 under and capture medalist honors in stroke-play qualifying for stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.
The 19-year-old Kono, from Honolulu, edged 14-year-old Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y., by one stroke. Park shot a 69 to finish at 5-under 139 for the two rounds of stroke play.
The top 64 players advanced to match play, which starts today. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
Columbus’ Stacey Kim is in a four-way tie for the 64th spot after shooting a 78 Tuesday. Kim will return to the course at 7:30 a.m. to play for the final match-play spot.
Local golfers advance in tourney
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Columbus golfers Cates Culpepper and Robert Swift and LaGrange’s Charlie Martin made the cut in the second round of the Georgia Junior Championship, while two other local golfers finished out of contention on Tuesday.
Culpepper shot a second-round 76, three strokes over his first-round total, for a two-day 5-over 149 and a share of 36th place.
Swift was part of a group of six golfers who just made the cut. He shot consecutive 77s to sit at 10-over.
Martin cut three strokes off his opening score with a 75, moving him to 9-over 153 and into a seven-way tie for 58th.
Columbus’ Rhoades Sturkie and Carter Mize Jr. shot a 77 and 84, respectively, and failed to advance.
Scott Wolfes of St. Simons Island shot a 6-under 66 Tuesday to take sole possession of the lead. Seventy golfers made the cut, and ten were below par entering today’s final round at Sea Island Golf Club.
