What a frustrating night for the Snakes last night...not to mention their beat writer. I always have concerns about the broadcast from a new arena. Turns out they were certainly justified last night. Ugh...
First, the positive. The camera work was good and they obviously had more than one camera. The announcer was great...I think. In the first period, I could barely hear him, but he called not only the Surge players by name, but the Snakes too! That's it for the positive...
He said to email him with comments and concerns, so I did. I told him that I was enjoying the broadcast but could hardly hear him. Got a nice email from Leif saying he'd pumped up the volume a bit and hoped it was better.
Second period...NO volume!! Mid-second, no Pointstreak. Now I've got few choices, none of them good. I tried listening to Mike Vee and watching b2 but last night the delay was not just a few seconds. Much longer than that. Drove me crazy, so I watched the second period in silence. At this point the Snakes are down 1-0. I'm picturing the tying goal and no knowledge of the player or circumstances.
So for the third I develop a new strategy. I listen to Mike, ready for him to alert me who scored...then I could watch it. He gave me what little info I had for a story. The power play inequities for one thing. Also told me Nic Boucher sat out, which was why I couldn't find him on the ice. Late last night Pointstreak was stuck again, this time in the third period.
Writing the story was torture as I couldn't say how many shots Ian or Ryan stopped. The power play numbers were in the neighborhood but I know not on the money.
As for tonight, the game isn't even on the b2 schedule. I'm assuming a barn described as "quaint" doesn't have the technology, but will check again later to be sure!
