Not a great start to the road trip, Snakes fans. Tonight the task doesn't get easier as the guys will arrive in Biloxi in the wee hours of Saturday morning and then go out to face the first-place team.
I can't say enough about Louisiana's goalie tonight. Mike Brown had everything thrown at him but the kitchen sink and he stopped all but 2. He turned away 45 of 47 Snakes shots. Wow. Six players had 5 or more SOG. Brown stopped all of them, except for Brett's two, and was rightfully awarded the first star of the game.
Ya'all know I hate to judge too harshly when I'm watching on the web, but Louisiana's camera work is better than most. It's closer and they have several camera angles so I see more of the game.
I have to say that Andrew didn't look comfortable out there. I can always tell when a goalie is in for a tough night when he has trouble controlling the rebounds as Andrew did tonight. The first goal came on a rebound and so did the second...it hit off Kyle's skate...ugh. That one wasn't Andrew's fault, or Kyle's. Kyle was right in front, but his skate ended up getting an assist.
Segal's goal was off his own rebound, the fourth was the shortie which was a two-on-one disaster and the fifth one I don't believe Andrew ever saw.
The offense has to be terribly frustrated. They had chance after chance and just couldn't get the puck by Brown. At least Brett broke up the shutout and managed a second goal. Good job by Brett.
There were a couple of fights. Segal handled Pete pretty well but his showboating afterward was way over the top. He got an extra two minutes as instigator. Is there a penalty for showboating? haha
Matt dropped the gloves with Hill. Decision Kinnunen.
The Snakes had 6 PP chances and the IceGators 4. To hear the announcer tell it, the Snakes had 99 to 2 for LA. Geez...this guy launched on the Cottonmouths and wouldn't let up. Said the Snakes were whining and complaining all night. He even had a witty little suggestion for his listeners:
"Let's all do shots whenever Columbus complains. The problem is you'll be passed out." Really professional, huh?
After a media timeout, he announces that he did five shots during the break. When LA scored its shortie, he screeched: "take that, officiating crew!!!!" Yikes.
I hated that he did all this tonight because I usually enjoy listening to him. He always seemed knowledgeable and acknowledged achievement by both the home team and visitors. Maybe he got caught up in the euphoria of their four-game winning streak.
A word of advice for the announcer, whose name is unusual, and I'm sorry I didn't catch: instead of squealing about complaining opponents, maybe you could work on getting their names right! All night long, you called out Maladono...it's MALDONADO. Also, number 27 for the Snakes is not Kinnuwan but KINNUNEN.
This game marked the return of Sammy and Daryl. Neither had a goal, but Sam had 5 SOG and Daryl 3. Out of 8 shots from those two guys, wouldn't you think ONE would go in?
Well, as I write this, the guys are showering, dressing, eating and heading for Biloxi. The bad news is that the Surge sits atop the standings. The good news is that two of Zultek's 10-game suspension come vs the Cottonmouths, the first of which is Saturday night. It didn't help Huntsville tonight. Maybe it'll help the Snakes tomorrow night.
Knoxville also lost, so the Snakes didn't lose any ground. The standings are so close. Can't wait to see what the next five weeks bring!!
