I must admit, Snakes fans, that I groaned when the FireAntz got that early goal. Deja vu all over again, as Yogi Berra would say. Same thing on Thursday night when the IceGators scored on their first official SOG.
I didn't get any other negative vibes on Friday night, though. I felt like the guys were hustling, scrapping and fighting for the puck. How about Brody dropping the gloves? A rare occurance, but I thought Brody did pretty well.
Not too happy, on one hand, when Sammy went after Sbrocchi. We all remember Sam spending 30 miserable days on the shelf, right? The other side of the coin is that Sbrocchi appeared to whack Orrin in the face with a stick...accidentally, I'm sure :)...and Sammy wasn't about to let that go. I love it when the guys stick up for each other. Orrin, even though he's the elder statesman of this team, is like everybody's kid brother. Mess with Orrin...mess with me...haha.
I asked Orrin how many goals the Snakes COULD have scored tonight. My estimate was 8-10 haha. He said that's a pretty good number, but that Spillane was stopping everything he could see. Miss Flit and I were commenting during the game that Spillane was NOT going to allow a long slapshot or a point blank shot.
Never miss a local story.
If you noticed. the only goal in regulation came on a nifty passing play which had Spillane leaning the other way. Sam shot it across the crease and Brett was waiting to pop it in the corner of the net.
In the shootout, Sam went top shelf and Jesse five-hole. Orrin's non-goal in the shootout was strange. I really believe the ref didn't see it. He glanced at the linesman who was down there with him. After a second, he ruled "no goal", which he almost had to do. No way he could give Orrin a goal...and the Snakes a win...unless he was sure it went in. I couldn't see it and was definitely late starting to write, so I didn't have time to investigate.
This was a big victory in that every two points is huge down the stretch. Also, the Snakes' track record beyond regulation isn't great, so this should give them confidence. The Snakes were 0-4 in overtime and 1-1 in previous shootouts. So, in six previous games that went beyond 60 minutes, the Snakes got two points. Ugh.
Three games left in this homestand before a short trip to Huntsville. Three tough ones coming up against top tier teams. Huntsville tonight and a pair against Mississippi next weekend. Big test for the Snakes, but they'll face these teams at home. Have to beat them sometime if they're going to go deep into the playoffs.
Tonight's game was a great start!!
