Indian Wells, Calif. — Columbus’ Court Assassins of the World Team Tennis has secured the No. 1 seed in today’s semifinals of the 3.0 Advanta World Team Tennis Rec League national tournament.
On Friday, Columbus won the first of three round-robin matches, defeating St. Paul, Minn., 36-18, winning all six of the team matches.
“I subbed in the men’s doubles when we were down 1-4 and we came back and won that match. We had already won the men’s and women’s singles Friday so that made sure we would take that match,” team captain Derrick Pugh said.
On Saturday, the Court Assassins had a doubleheader. First, they defeated San Diego’s “Ball Busters”, 29-18, winning five of six individual matches.
In the final match of the day that clinched the top seed, Columbus defeated the Cary, N.C., “Wintry Mix” team by a 31-16 total. Again, Columbus was down in one match 1-4 in the women’s doubles and Pugh subbed to come back and win 6-4.
“Everyone so far as played a good match, and the subbing was helpful,” Pugh said. “That is different than other tennis matches because in team tennis, you can sub.”
Columbus will play the fourth seed St. Paul Rockets at 11 a.m. today. With a win, they will play the winner between California and North Carolina at 2 p.m.
