Carver’s Devin Burns threw five touchdown passes and ran for another as the Tigers ended their regular season on a winning note by defeating Region 2-AAA foe Northside, 48-15, Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium.

“We were trying to get a quick start and take advantage of our receivers who did a good job getting to the ball and Burns did a good job getting it to them,” said Carver coach Dell McGee after the game.

“But we had some things that I feel we need to work on.”

The Tigers, who won the region title last week, host either Burke County or West Laurens in the first round of the state playoffs.

Burns threw his first two touchdowns in the first quarter as the Tigers took advantage of two Northside fumbles and raced to a 21-0 first quarter advantage.

However, Northside added a safety, field goal, and a touchdown run from Jeremy Rodriquez to close the gap at the half to 21-12.

“Our guys played hard the entire game. That is a good football team over there,” said Northside coach Paul Cates of his opponents Thursday. “We felt that they would keep 1 (Carver running back Isaiah Crowell) under wraps and throw some. They got into a rhythm on their passing game in the second half and we could not stop it.”

Burns, who sat out the second quarter as Tiger reserves played, came back with pinpoint passing as he hit three different receivers for scores in the second half and ran for another.

Riyahd Jones caught the first two scores in the first half, so Burns went to Byron Key, Crowell and Kris Carson for his touchdowns in the second half. Burns finished with 11 completions on 18 attempts for 266 yards and no interceptions. He ran once for three yards and his only score.

For Northside, Michael Faggett had 45 yards rushing in the first half but was held to 10 second-half yards. Preston Bray also kicked two field goals for the Patriots in the game.

Northside, now 5-5 overall, will go on the road in the first round of the playoffs and will meet Baldwin in a Friday night contest in Milledgeville.
