A pair of Columbus volleyball players have been selected to play in the Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Match on Saturday at St. Pius X in Atlanta.

Columbus’ Ashleigh Tompa and Ashley Forman have been invited to play in the match, which will feature a four-team round robin.

Forman finished the season with a state-high 139 digs while Tompa finished ninth in kills with 425.

Columbus reached the Class AAA state final, where it fell to Woodward Academy in three games Saturday.

Heisman nominees

A Columbus cross country star and a Callaway football player are among 20 finalists for the 2009 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Columbus’ Charlie Sparks and Callaway linebacker Randy Bailey are up for the award. The winner will go on to compete for the national version of the award in New York City on Dec. 11. Each of the national finalists will receive a gold medal and $2,000 for his or her high school. The boys and girls national winners will receive a trophy and get $10,000 for their schools.

Fountain City Classic

Albany State linebacker Bruce Ryles can’t remember when the Fountain City Classic wasn’t part of his life. He can remember going to the game as young as 6, and the former Kendrick and Shaw player finally gets his chance to participate Saturday, when the Rams play Fort Valley State at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

“It’s really exciting for me to get to be part of the game now,” said Ryles, a freshman. “I’ve been to the game, watched the parade, and now I get to play in it.

“I think it’s going to be as big as I always thought it would be.”

Ryles started his high school football career at Shaw but transferred to Kendrick and played there until he graduated in 2007.

Russell County change

Russell County will be a Class 5A school for at least two years beginning next school year.

The Warriors football team has been tabbed to join Class 5A Region 2 next season, when it will compete against Booker T. Washington, Carroll, Charles Henderson, Eufaula, Rehobeth, Tallassee and Valley.

All-star game on Versus

The Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic football game will be televised live across the country.

Cable network Versus has picked up the rights to the game, which will be played on Dec. 12 in Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Central-Phenix City running back Deon Hill is the only local player selected to the Alabama roster.
