AUBURN, Ala. — Alli Smalley, the lone returning starter from Auburn’s regular-season SEC champion squad last season, scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Tigers to a 70-65 win in their season opener Friday against Troy at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.

The junior guard went 8-for-21 from the floor as Auburn (1-0) held off the pesky Trojans, who were within three points with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

Chantel Hilliard and reserve Nicolle Thomas added 13 points and five rebounds each for the Tigers. Auburn forward Jordan Greenleaf, who missed almost all of last season with a knee injury, finished with five points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Auburn turned 29 Troy turnovers into 27 points.

Brittnie Davis scored 14 points to lead the Trojans (0-1).
