Hailed as “The Professor of Percussion,” Dwight Baldwin, a percussion performer for more than 40 years, kicked off his first tour in Columbus on June 21. Throughout the three days of the tour, he is teaching local children the art of percussion at libraries. His workshop, “ABC’s of Drumming,” aims at introducing the children to the basics of drumming. “ABC’s of Drumming is the beginning of the musical adventure,” said Baldwin, who started the program 25 years ago. “It opens kids up to music and life.”
The artist's son, 25-year-old Wesley Baldwin, is helping his father with the music tour in Columbus. He believes the program offers children something to do other than watching cartoons all day during their summer break. “I appreciate him doing that because he did it for me when I was growing up, now it is my turn to help out and give back,” he said.
The Baldwins’ drumming lessons received positive feedback from participants. Susan Luquire, a mother of a 8-year-old, said, “We loved it. It was amazing.”
