Springer Opera House leader Paul Pierce is retiring. Two staffers will take on his roles

Paul Pierce, the producing artistic director of the Springer Opera House — known as the historic State Theater of Georgia in downtown Columbus — is retiring.

The Springer announced the news Thursday morning.

After 35 seasons at the Springer, 2023 will be his final year as one of the nation’s longest-serving theatrical producers, concluding a professional career spanning 46 years and more than 500 productions.

“I’ve literally spent half of my time on Planet Earth at the Springer Opera House,” Pierce, 70, said in the news release. “Leading the Springer has been the greatest honor and joy of my life but it’s time for younger, smarter people to propel this amazing theatre into the future.”

The Springer board has decided to split Pierce’s role into two positions. Danielle Varner, currently the managing director, will take on Pierce’s CEO duties in the role of executive producer. Keith McCoy, currently the associate artistic director, will become the artistic director.

The leadership change will be effective Oct. 1.
