Celebration around the Chattahoochee Valley

Thunder on the Hooch: Annual God and Country Celebration at The Phenix City Amphitheater and along the Chattahoochee River. Starts 1 p.m. Wednesday. Free.

Firecracker Festival and Lions Club Barbecue: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday. Across from the Corps of Engineers office, Fort Gaines, Ga. Chicken barbecue and car show, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Fireworks take place 35 minutes after sundown. $6.50 per plate; $5.50 chicken halves. 229-768-2049.

Independence Day Weekend Celebration: 2 p.m. Saturday-Wednesday. George T. Bagby State Park & Lodge. Watermelon eating contest on Saturday, family beach games including a bug beauty contest, water balloon toss, sponge relay races, sack races and bicycle parade. Sunday brings a carnival and ice cream social, cupcake walk, face painting and games for kids. Tickets for $1 are good for one bowl of ice cream or one activity. $3 to park. 229-768-2571.

Surf and Sand Spectacular: 7 a.m. Garden opens, 9 a.m. attractions open, Wednesday. Callaway Gardens. Beach activities including swimming in Robin Lake, playing miniature golf or shuffleboard, picnicking, riding paddleboats and the miniature train and climbing the rock wall. The Florida State University "Flying High" Circus gives two performances at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the sounds of the Swingin' Medallions at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. patriotic fireworks. $15 adults, $7.50 for age 6-12. 800-225-5292.

Independence Day Celebration: 10 a.m. Wednesday. Historic Westville, Lumpkin, Ga. Old cars, old games, bluegrass and barbecue. The boom of the anvil every hour on the hour. Sack and three-legged races, the grease pole climb and the watermelon seed-spitting contest at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. $10 adults, $4 K-12 grade. 888-733-1850.

4th of July BBQ: 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Corner of MLK Blvd. and Broad Street in Lumpkin, Ga. The Lumpkin Downtown Development Authority has partnered with the Stewart County Historical Commission and Historic Westville for this event. When you purchase plates, you will receive a ticket good for half off the regular admission price to Westville for its 4th of July celebration. $8 plates, $18 whole Boston butt.

Downtown Bar Crawl: To celebrate the holiday, participating downtown bars will have no cover charge. Beach Party: SoHo Bar & Grill (5751 Milgen Road) hosts a free beach party with a performance by Lower Definition, a San Diego-based rock band.
