Fountain City Classic is more than a game

Fort Valley State and Albany State universities play the 20th annual Fountain City Classic on Saturday, but there are plenty of events leading up to the game. Here’s a partial list.


7-9 p.m. University Recruitment Fair. Albany State University and Fort Valley State University officials will meet with prospective students at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center, Founder’s Room, 801 Front Ave.

7:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m. Cuff Links and Pearls Networking Mixer at Mario’s, 1010 Broadway. Refreshments and cash bar.


6–10 a.m. Live remote broadcast of the “D.J. Chip in the Morning Show” with Vicky James at the A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Prizes and radio giveaways.

1-5 p.m. FCC Career Expo and Job Fair co-sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor. Columbus Convention & Trade Center, exhibit hall.

5 p.m.–1 a.m. Vendor Fair Village opens at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center. Women and men’s accessories and latest fashions. Greek merchandise, jewelry, CDs. Free. Cash Bar.

6–8 p.m. Live remote broadcast with Foxie 105’s Michael Soul and K-92.7’s Kris Green in the median between the Columbus Marriott Hotel and Columbus Convention & Trade Center. Prizes.

6:30–10 p.m. 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Fountain City Classic honoring FVSU President Larry E. Rivers and ASU President Everett Freeman and a classic salute to Miss FVSU and Miss ASU courts and student government officials with special entertainment. The Columbus Convention & Trade Center. Business Attire. Invitation Only.

8 p.m.–1 a.m. “Back in the Day Buffet” and PlayDate Columbus hosted by Wane Hailes and Friends. Food, cocktails, music and games. Columbus Convention & Trade Center, Foundry Room. $20.


10 a.m. Parade route starts at Colin Powell Parkway and Broad Street in Phenix City; goes over the 13th Street Bridge to Columbus, down Broadway and ends on Ninth Street.

10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Tailgate Village Party with Foxie 105 air personality Michael Soul. Lot G of Columbus Civic Center. Parking $5. Tailgating: small tents, $25; large tents, $50; RVs and trucks, $75.

2 p.m. “The Classic” football game at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. $12-$20 in advance; $15-$25 at the gate. Halftime show features the ASU Marching Rams Show Band and FVSU Marching Blue Machine.

10 p.m.-2 a.m. After game party with WAGH 101.3 radio personality Edgar Champagne at Columbus Convention & Trade Center. $15. Tickets sold at the Columbus Marriott Hotel and the game.
