New release worth a grain of Salt

As the only real female action star in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie is finally back on the big screen after taking two years off following the birth of twins as Evelyn Salt, a deep undercover CIA operative on the run.

Two years after being captured in North Korea and tortured as a suspected spy, Salt is more focused on celebrating her second wedding anniversary than being a CIA operative when she is accused of being a Russian sleeper agent by a terminally ill Russian defector, Vassily Orlov, played by Daniel Pierce and Daniel Olbrychski.

Desperate to clear her name and protect her husband, Mike Krause (August Diehl), Salt goes on the run but in doing so raises the suspicions of gung-ho CIA agent Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) even as her mentor, Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber), insists that the accusation is unfounded.

In order for Salt to clear her name, she must outrun and outwit the FBI, Secret Service and the CIA, all while uncovering information on a plot to breathe life back into the Cold War by assassinating the Russian president, who is attending the funeral of the U.S. vice president.

The longer Salt eludes capture, the higher the stakes get and the more she begins to figure out who is trying to frame her — and why.

While there is nothing particularly new or inventive about this James Bond-type of movie either for moviegoers or for Jolie, who is used to playing these types of parts, she plays the feminine Bond better than any other actress in Hollywood.

Jolie doesn’t have all the gadgets of Bond, but the action sequences keep you involved in the movie although the plot is easy to figure out for anyone who has seen at least one spy movie.

Some of the stunts really stretch the imagination of being anywhere near plausible, but the action is nonstop, which means you won’t fall asleep and will remained entertained.

If you are a Jolie fan, you will enjoy this movie, but if you are looking for something original, you’ll have to look for another movie.
