Roonie G, Pauly D and a rock fundraiser
Roonie G isn’t a DJ Pauly D hater.
Sure, the “Jersey Shore” star — known for flaunting a tan and calling unappealing women grenades — finished one spot ahead of the Columbus entertainer in a recent list of the nation’s top 10 DJs.
But Columbus’ DJ Roonie G, who ranked ninth, won’t criticize Pauly D for capitalizing on his “Jersey Shore” fame.
“I don’t blame him for that,” Roonie said in a recent phone interview.
After all, Roonie isn’t in a complaining mood. This is his best placement so far in the fan-voted America’s Best DJ contest, presented by Pioneer DJ and industry publication DJ Times.
The local DJ, who owns Mix Ultra Lounge in downtown Columbus and brings his audio-visual act to places like Las Vegas, said the new honor fuels his ambition.
“I’m a student of life,” he said. “If you work hard, things are beautiful.” He has a variety of future goals, many of which are driven by an interest in writing and producing music.
Want to see Roonie in action? Visit Mix Ultra Lounge, 1107 Broadway, on Saturday.
If he’s too humble to say it, I will: Roonie would give Pauly D a run for his money in a fist-pumping battle. No Snooki required.
Altruism rocks
While you’re downtown Saturday night, stop by Daileys for a rock concert and charity fundraiser.
The bar hosts Drewlafest, a local “rock for charity” event established in 2008. It’s designed “to help local families and children with disabilities, medical hardships and everyday living expenses associated with such tragedies,” organizers say.
The event was named in honor of Andrew Cook, a local boy diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in June 2008.
Local acts Sol, Ophir Drive and Drop The Veil will perform. Guests can also expect a charity raffle with prizes.
Saturday’s event supports two local patients — Alton Shavers and Andrew Cook — and their families.
Alton Shavers suffered a motorcycle accident this year and sustained multiple severe injuries. Andrew Cook, now 14, has experienced medical issues related to his inoperable brain tumor. Both families have financial stress.
Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 and seating is limited. Daileys is at 1039 Broadway in downtown Columbus. 706-320-3353.
