Oktoberfest offers authentic entertainment, food and drink

If you didn’t make it to Germany earlier this month, fear not. Fort Benning is hosting its very own Oktoberfest at Uchee Creek and they go to great lengths to make sure it has an authentic Bavarian feel.

“We try to model after the authentic Oktoberfest in Germany,” said Chris Wojciechowski, marketing specialist at Fort Benning’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation department.

For musical entertainment, the Mitten Walk Jodelers, who are being flown over from Germany, will be back as well as a new band, Sonnenschein Express.

The event kicks off at 4 p.m Friday, with the traditional keg tapping at 6 p.m. Every day there will be inflatables for kids to enjoy, as well as face painting and story time; laser tag and Rock Band/Guitar Hero will be available to entertain teens.

There will be a cross country 10K (6.2 miles) at 9 a.m. Saturday; registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and it costs $20 to participate. For those who would rather take a leisurely stroll, the Volksmarch will also begin at 9 a.m. It is stroller- and pet-friendly and free of charge.

Wojciechowski said pets are welcome and there will be contests for them to participate: best costume, best owner look-alike and best dog trick.

Oktoberfest hours are 4-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday; the event is free of charge and will feature authentic German food and drink for purchase.

For those without a post sticker, Uchee Creek can be accessed from Alabama using Highway 165.
