Cinco de Mayo parties: Try these Columbus nightlife options

Don't let tequila blind you to this weekend's party highlights.

With Cinco de Mayo on Saturday, the go-to nightlife plan is obvious -- drink a margarita.

You'll have many opportunities to achieve that goal at local bars and restaurants.

But "frozen" versus "on the rocks" isn't the only decision you'll make this weekend. A full nightlife calendar makes for lots of opportunities to find the proverbial perfect party. Here are some noteworthy suggestions.

Friday bar crawl

Visit downtown Columbus Friday night, when one $10 cover gets you into many Broadway bars.

Hysteria at Spicoli's

Pour some sugar on me? Um, sure. Hysteria, billed as the No. 1 Def Leppard tribute band in the Southeast, performs at Spicoli's Saturday night. A $5 cover starts at 9 p.m., music starts at 10 p.m. Spicoli's is at 5762 Milgen Road in Columbus.

Crane at Scruffy Murphy's

Trust us, there's no shame in celebrating Cinco de Mayo at an Irish pub. Scruffy Murphy's, 1037 Broadway, hosts performances by Atlanta-based Crane Friday and Saturday night. The high-energy act has been compared to bands like Maroon 5.

The show is part of Friday's bar crawl. Cover is $5 Saturday. Music starts at 10 p.m. both nights. Whisky Bent performs a free show Thursday at the bar.

Busy weekend at After 5

If you've never been to After 5 Sports Bar & Grill, the Columbus hot spot at 3709 Gentian Blvd., this might be a good weekend to check it out. After 5 on Friday hosts a performance by R&B act Lyfe Unltd. Tickets are $5 advance, $10 at the door. Music starts at 10 p.m.

Boxing at Illusions

OK, this isn't technically part of the weekend, but we couldn't resist. Illusions, 6499 Veterans Parkway in Columbus, hosts women's boxing on Monday.

The live matches start at 11 p.m. Women get in free until 11 p.m., men pay $5. Cover is $10 after 11 p.m.
