March 19: Puttin' on the Dog fundraiser set for March 19 to help Humane Society of Harris County

Kathryn Genova, director of Humane Society of Harris County, and Elaine McMillen, Chairman of "Puttin' on the Dog" fundraiser answer questions about the organization and its March 19th fundraiser.

Tell us a little about the Humane Society of Harris County's mission and future goals:

Our mission and objective is the adoption of stray or neglected animals, the prevention and relief of suffering among animals, to assist in building relationships between animals and people for the betterment of our community and ongoing public education.

Our future goals along with the completion of our facility are:

Reduce euthanasia of adoptable pets in our community by 50 percent in the first 3 years of operation.

Introduce a comprehensive education for elementary age students of Harris County to encourage responsible pet ownership and foster respect and kindness for all living beings.

Improve reclamation rate of lost pets in Harris County by 100 percent in first year of operation.

Create a comprehensive program of owners partnering with pets for the betterment of our community.

What do her readers need to know about this years' Putting on the Dog fundraiser?

First of all -- the date has been changed to March 19, 2013, but it will still be at Callaway Gardens in the Ballroom at the Inn from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.. We had such success last year that we are continuing with our vendor area, silent auction items and raffle. We will, however, have new fashions and wonderful models along with some of our own shelter dogs walking the "cat walk." Each year we have adopted dogs right off the runway at this event and I know it will continue to capture the hearts of each one who attends. How will the money raised be used?

The funds from POTD go directly into our General Operations fund. This fund basically feeds and cares for our animals, plus funds our ongoing programs, such as the Pet Pantry, the Feral Cat program, "Tag You're It" and our Therapy dogs.

How can women get involved with helping the HSHC?

That's easyCALL US!! Seriously, we do have a great group of women and men helping us, but we always need many more hands and minds on board. One of our most successful operations is DOG-GONE GOOD BARGAINS located in downtown Pine Mountain. Monetary donations, donated items for the store and volunteers are always needed. Also we would love to have people interested in the fundraisers to join us for "Puttin' on the Dog" 2014. It is one of our major fundraisers and we have such a good time making it happen each year. I would love to hear from anyone interested in helping us any time. And there are always opportunities for volunteers to actually help with the animals. After we are in our new facility there will continue to be more opportunities for volunteers there.

How can families adopt animals from the HSHC?

Each week some of our shelter animals are shown at PetSmart at Bradley Park in Columbus. We are there each Saturday and on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each week. When our Adoption and Education facility is open, families will also be able to see and adopt the animals there. It will be located at 4068 Barnes Mill Road in Hamilton, Georgia and will be open from 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Monday-Saturdays.
