It Took Nearly 20 Years for This Waylon Jennings Song to Finally Hit No. 1
On May 21, 1982, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with "Just to Satisfy You."
But the song's journey to the top had actually begun nearly two decades earlier.
Jennings originally co-wrote the chart-topping track with songwriter Don Bowman back in 1963, years before he and Nelson, 93, became two of the biggest stars in outlaw countrymusic. At the time, Jennings was still early in his career and far from the rebellious icon fans would later come to know.
Even though the song never became a major hit in its earliest form, Jennings clearly believed in it. Over the years, he continued performing "Just to Satisfy You" on radio appearances and in concerts, keeping the song alive long after its original release.
By the early 1980s, both Jennings and Nelson had transformed country music with their outlaw image and massive crossover success. Their friendship and musical chemistry had already produced memorable collaborations, so revisiting one of Jennings' oldest songs together felt especially meaningful.
The 1982 duet version gave "Just to Satisfy You" new life. With Nelson's unmistakable vocals blending alongside Jennings' rugged delivery, the song resonated with country audiences and climbed all the way to No. 1, where it remained for two weeks.
The track also became another important chapter in the legendary partnership between Jennings and Nelson, two artists whose collaborations helped define an era of country music and eventually paved the way for their future success as members of The Highwaymen.
