Beastie Boys' Mike D Announces Debut Album, and His Sons Are Involved
Beastie Boys alum Mike D will release his debut solo album, “Thank You,” from his Mike D 5D project, on Aug. 28. The set marks the first full-length album release from a Beastie Boys member since 2011’s “Hot Sauce Committee Part 2,” so it’s a long time coming.
So, what should you expect from the new album? According to a press statement provided to Newsweek, “Thank You” is a “dozen servings of sonically inventive post-electronic grooves and hypnotic hooks that find Mike D’s unmistakable voice leading the listener through an aural playground that defies categorization.”

In addition to the album announcement, Mike D has released a visualizer for the song “True Colors” off the set, which is streaming now.
Mike D started recording “Thank You” with what his camp describes as “experimental recording sessions” taking place at the musician’s home studio. What’s extra cool is that the sessions started with Mike’s sons Skyler and Davis, and then, more guests started to contribute to the set. The album also features colorful artwork by Can Can Press, Thad Higa and Charles Deroyan.

“It’s been so much fun making this music with people I love and I have grown to really appreciate in our collaboration,” Mike D said in a statement about the new album. “And I just hope it’s fun for others and not overly serious, because let’s be real, I’m releasing this music into a very strange and dark and power-fixated world that really devalues art and feelings and compassion and empathy and equality.”
It’s great to see a member of the Beasties keep the band’s legacy alive, especially with the help of his family.
